Obstacles and Solutions to English Public Speaking from EFL Students’ Voices: A Case at Can Tho University, Vietnam

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of clarifying the obstacles that existed in public speaking skills of students who were majoring in English studies, Department of English Language and Culture, School of Foreign Languages, Can Tho University, including 100 participants. Using the descriptive method, the questionnaire was designed with two separate sections to collect students' opinions about difficulties and solutions towards English public speaking (EPS). The collected data would be encoded and put into SPSS 22.0 program for analysis and statistics. The findings illustrated that the obstacles mainly came from the lack of English speaking environment, limited vocabulary knowledge and low-self confidence. From careful analysis of the above limitations, the corresponding solutions were proposed to pose some pedagogical implications for students, classroom teachers, school administrators and educators as well.
